<image:title>Who We Are - The Devices for Students Story</image:title>
<image:caption>Devices for Students was inspired by a man named Tom in Detroit who woke up to the startling news that a large percentage of Detroit Public School students do not have a laptop or Internet Service Provider access at home. As he started working to help this acute issue, he connected with colleagues who realized other geographic areas were dealing with similar issues. That’s where we came in.</image:caption>

<image:title>Who We Are - Jay and Chris, two long time friends who grew up with limited access to devices in lower income communities, saw firsthand how lack of access to quality education creates barriers for students to reach their full potential. They connected with their contacts at education focused non-profits and Bay Area school districts and discovered the alarming fact that even in the Bay Area - the heart of technology - school districts have tens of thousands of students who are unable to participate in online learning needed to progress a student’s education.</image:title>
<image:caption>Jay and Chris quickly joined forces with a local public school teacher, Brigitte, and an advocate for underrepresented groups in tech, Katrina, who jumped on board and Devices for Students was formed.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Who We Are</image:title>
<image:caption>Within days, Devices for Students tapped into the Bay Area community to connect with 10+ nonprofits and 20+ school districts to understand both the depth and the breadth of the digital divide. Each conversation was filled with energy and desire to help solve this massive chasm in access to education - something we learned is a consistent issue in today’s education system. Devices for Students has partnered with Spark, the Ravenswood Education Foundation, nonprofits, school districts, corporate partners, and the community to make sure that Bay Area students, regardless of socioeconomic status, have access to the same online learning opportunities. <image:title>Our Program - It’s bigger than COVID</image:title>
<image:caption>COVID-19 shed light on the urgency of providing students with long term access to the devices they need to further their education. These students require internet and laptops in order to advance to the next grade level, graduate high school, and complete college applications.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Our Program - Turning crisis into opportunity</image:title>
<image:caption>Devices for Students was inspired by the sweeping changes COVID-19 made to our education system. Access to remote learning is no longer a luxury, it’s now a necessity for K-12 students to continue their education. Twelve million public school children in the United States do not have access to internet or computers at home. Our mission is to bridge that gap by providing laptops and reliable WiFi access to the students who need them most.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Our Program - How it works</image:title>
<image:caption>Devices for Students purchases heavily discounted laptops/data hotspots and processes donated devices through the community and local sponsors. Our team of pro-bono volunteers configure all the software and hardware at a staging location and handle training and enablement at the teacher and student levels. Through our partnerships, we have established the infrastructure to identify students in need, reduce device acquisition cost, streamline device distribution, and to track the initiative’s results.</image:caption>
